The Occurrence of Hungarian (Magyar) Surnames

in the Stropkov Area of Upper Zemplin

by Miles Lambert

This article provides an historical overview for family history researchers concerned with Stropkov and adjacent regions of eastern Slovakia and southeastern Poland.  It is meant particularly for those whose interests extend beyond the charting of family trees and reach into regional history as an explanation for family names and aspects of family history.  At the same time, however, this article is a preliminary presentation of ongoing research, and as such, is not a definitive treatment of the subject.  Rather, it is a summarization of the historical factors involved and the questions needing to be addressed vis-à-vis Hungarian surnames in the Stropkov region
