I am seeking information on my husbands's ancestry. His grandfather, Joe Arday was born in Uruguay in late 19th century and he came to Australia early 20th Century. The family story is that he is Basque but I'm more inclined to think the origin is Hungarian. Can anyone help me? His signature on his naturalisation papers in Aust clearly says "Arday".
I would be very grateful. Mary

Hello,
Please bear with me. My gg-grandfather (Makely, Makel, Makhely)and I'm trying to find out his name and parents names. He was a soldier in Austria or Hungary army about 1850-1870 and was a blacksmith for the Austria or Hungary army in Slovakia (then upper Hungary). I don't know for sure for how long he served, or which unit he served in. when my great,great-grandfather was born around 1835-50 in Hazin, Gezseny, Vinne, District of Michalove, Region of Kosice, Slovakia. I also know that the LDS has rosters for most units for this period filmed, but that there is no index for enlisted men of which my ancestor most likely was in. My understanding is that the only way to find someone is to do unit by unit search of the rosters. Is this true? I guess that I will only find my ancestor in Hungarian military records (Magyar Honvédség) or Hungarian cavalry were (Hussars) because of the spelling of are surname!.. My G/G Gandparents, lived most of the time in Hazin, and had 13 children which 5 died 3 were born in New Jersey and 5 were born in the Kosice Region of slovakia. I know that Kosice is a major town and was a garrison town at one time. I assume that he belonged to a unit that was stationed at Kosice (or at least recruited at Kosice)it may have been army unit IR-66 or IR-33, or some kind of a Cavalry unit, and to search all of the rosters during the correct time frame of those units. Does this seem to be the best way to go? Does anyone know which units or how I would ascertain which units or personnel were stationed at/recruited from Kosice during this time frame? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much, This is one great site for help and I have recommended it to all of my friends. Thanks so very much for all the help and cooperation I have received. e-mail paul.makely@us.army.mil

Found my grandmother's baptism certificate with Hazin listed in the ink stamp at bottom of certificate and written in toward the top. The certificate is in three languages, none of which I know, but the one is Latin and the diocese was Tresov.
I assume her birth year was 1903
Looking for Yacik ( that was how my great aunt spelled perhaps it was Jacik? there though ) and Doric. any info would be appreciated. my mother was always sort of quiet about her family origins.

Thanks for this. I have a USA Passport App. for my great grandparents dated 13 Jul 1912. It states that Michael Dorunda was born 1 Aug 1871 in Honksez (as transcribed at Ancestry.com), Hungary. The actual handwriting looks like "Honkicg." I found a village on your list spelled Hunkocz, in the county of Saros, which is pretty close to the spelling on the application. Now I have somewhere to begin searching!

Greetings from Kentucky
My great grandfather (surname Jaczko, pronounced Yashko) had a farm in HR. Grandparents Miklos and Anna Yasko (both born in HR) came to Pennsylvania in the early 1900's with him working in the coal mines. He, with 4 brothers and 1 sister, together with a stepbrother of the same surname, came first to Webster, PA and eventually settled in and around Jerome, Windber, and Johnstown (Somerset and Cambria counties of PA). I have a family tree going back 5 or 6 generations for the family that had it's real roots in Hrabova Roztoka. News from HR will always be welcome.

Bill, great work I enjoyed reading entire research. I will use this information. In the introductary comments you mention the Ruthenians twice. Don't read too much about the Ruthenians in, especially, the banat. Also, you don't mention anything about the Romanians; Why?
Bill Tarkulich:
I keep the web site focused to Slovakia, with a few digressions to the borderlands. This keeps the value of the content high. There were very few Romanians in Slovakia.
There are a couple of excellent Romanian research groups as you must know already.

Began tracing my roots about a year ago. This site has been extremely helpful in that search. My father's father at the age of 14 traveled with his father to Pottstown PA in 1910. Surname Zubaly from what is now Zemplinsky Branc. I find no evidence that my great grandfather stayed in the US. My grandfather's wife arrived in 1903 as a 4 year old with her mother, younger sister, and uncle. Surname Panocz-Bednar from what is now Rovne, Zemplin county. Her father arrived in 1902 also locating in Pottstown, PA to be with his brother-in-law who had arrived in 1899. I hope to learn more about my Slovakian roots, however, I do not read or speak the language. I would love to find out if there are relatives still living in Slovakia. I wish I knew how and why they ended up where they did.

Have just begun searching this site. Am looking for family from Maly Lipnik, Slovakia a small village in Eastern Slovakia very near the Polish Border. My grandfather was Michael (Hnat. Hnath) Knott and my grandmother Susanna Lukachovsky (many versions of her surname). Michael's father was Petro or Petrus and his mother Helena (Julia or llyka) Gladis. Susanna's mother was Mary Buchinni and her father was Michael Lukachovsky)
My mother's people are from the Slabinja area of Croatia. Am searching this area. Grandmother was Sofia Obucina daughter of Nicola Obucina. Sofia had a brother Jovo married to Anica. Grandfather was Aleksa Tomic who became Alex Thomas. Aleksa claimed to be from Toct, Yugoslavia but I can find no such place anywhere in Europe.

I was recently alerted to the interesting intro pages to the Banska Bystricka death records. About 12 years ago I was visiting a fairly large Catholic Church in Kempenich, Rhenish Prussia (Rhineland Pfalz). In the old cemetery, there were quite a number of very old gravemarkers that had the skull and crossbones engraved on them along with the usual name and date information. I have never seen a satisfactory explanation for such a "morbid custom". Any ideas??
On to a different genealogical puzzle. My great-grandmother, Jozefa (ina?) Morawetz (Moravec) b. 1863 supposedly in Bohemia, immigrated to Milwaukee, WI in the mid 1880s, married Jozef Mazourek and died there in 1914. Villages of origins unknown; records mostly indicate Bohemia and Bohemian was spoken in my grandmother's home. She belonged to a Slovak fraternal organization called Zivena . I am unable to find any Zivena records for this time. Any thoughts?
Thank you,
Carol Leonard
Bill Tarkulich:
I wrote about these pages in 2005.
http://www.iabsi.com/gen/public/misc_bb_church_register.htm
Superstitions played a large role in village live, existing side-by-side with religious beliefs. What a priest or minister penned were most likely his personal beliefs and customs.
Additionally, what you describe as "morbid" would not have been viewed that way; death was engaged moreso than it is today.
Fraternal record archives were under no obligation to preserve records. Most of them appear to have been lost, and only the most rare of cases are located.
Locating the village is still the best way to proceed. There are many resources to pursue. Bohemia is now the Czech Republic.

SEDLICA is not a valid village name. It means "settlement". One possibility is NOVA SEDLICA, but the surname was not seen in those records.
Join the Delphi Forum or Slovak-Roots Mailing lists (free) and collaborate with the many active researchers to FIRST identify the correct village.

After that you have the village name, there are many record sets you can pursue.
